Miller and Carter Tipping Policy: How Tips Work for Diners

Tipping at Miller and Carter is your choice. If no service charge has been added to your bill, the usual UK custom is to leave around 10 to 12.5% for good service. Since 2024, the law requires that all tips and service charges go to staff with no deductions by the employer. This guide explains the Miller and Carter tipping policy from a diner’s point of view.

How Tipping Works at Miller and Carter

There is no fixed tipping rule for diners. On larger tables an optional 10% service charge may already appear on the bill; our service charge guide explains when that happens and how to remove or adjust it. Where no service charge is included, you can leave a tip in cash or add an amount when you pay by card. Ask your server if you are unsure how to add a card tip.

Where Your Tip Goes

Miller & Carter says that 100% of all tips given by guests are retained by frontline team members, and that staff at each restaurant vote every year on how tips are shared out, with more than 70 variations across its restaurants. The company also says general managers are not involved in the vote and do not receive tips, and that tips sit on top of core pay which is always at or above the national minimum wage.

This has been disputed. In 2023 the Unite union alleged that some restaurants required waiting staff to tip out up to 2% of their gross sales to kitchen, bar and management staff, in around a third of the chain’s restaurants, and that this sometimes left staff out of pocket. Miller & Carter described those claims as inaccurate and potentially defamatory. We report both sides because the dispute is a matter of public record; the details of how tips are shared can also differ from one restaurant to another.

The Fair Tips Law

The Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023 changed the legal position across the UK. Since it came into force in 2024, employers must pass on all tips, gratuities and service charges to workers without making deductions, and must distribute them fairly between staff. This gives diners extra confidence that money left as a tip or paid as a service charge reaches the team rather than the business.

How Much Should You Tip?

One published guide to the brand puts the UK restaurant norm at 10 to 12.5% of the bill where service is not already included as a discretionary charge. Treat that as a starting point, not a rule. Tip more for standout service and less, or nothing extra, if the meal disappointed you. If a service charge is already on the bill, you do not need to add a tip on top unless you want to.

Cash or Card Tips

Cash tips go straight into the team’s hands with no processing involved. Card tips are convenient and are covered by the same fair tips law. Either way, the amount is your decision. If you are paying a large bill by card after a group meal, it is worth checking the total on the terminal before you confirm, especially if a service charge is also listed. The booking guide helps with planning group visits, the main menu guide helps you plan the meal, and the offers page and vouchers guide cover ways to manage the bill.
